Meet Matt Johnson – the recipient of the 2018 Annual Executive Award.

Employee Spotlight

What is your role at DF/Net?

I am the Data Analytics Team Lead and Biostatistician. I manage the Data Analytics group: we create the SDTM and ADam datasets, Tables, Listings and Figures, operational reporting and SAS edit checks. As well, we help prepare protocols and clinical study reports, create sample sizes, perform in-depth analyses, etc.

How long have you been with DF/Net?

I started in August of 2015, so a little over three years.

What did you do before starting at DF/Net?

I taught statistics at OSU-Cascades in Bend, Oregon from 2011-2015 and coached their alpine ski team

What do you like most about working at DF/Net?

I really enjoy being exposed to all the different aspects of clinical research.  We go from protocol to CSR and produce CDISC datasets, plus our group is heavily involved in data management, including providing CDASH advice for variable naming in DFsetup.

Among all those things, what is or has been your favorite project?

They are all unique, and they all have their own challenges, but they’re also all interesting. I would say my favorite project was probably Syntrix Omni-Pain 102, because we recently published on that study. It was great to give advice on the statistical analyses and methodology, to perform the analyses, review the publication, and perform SDTM and ADaM for FDA submission. Because of how immersive it was, that probably made it my favorite project so far.

Outside of work, what are your interests, passions, or hobbies?

I have a lot, but my biggest passion is snow-skiing, I’ve been involved with ski racing since I was little. I also have a passion for water-skiing, mountain biking, road biking, and rock climbing. I’m now looking forward to introducing my 6-month old daughter to all these activities soon.

Where is your favorite place to ski in the Seattle area?

Back-country Alpental. There is no better place to ski.

Who would you say is your role model?

I would say my role model has been my father. He worked for 38 years at Boeing, and he’s someone I’ve really looked up to. He  had five mottos to try to live your life by and I try to think of them often:

  1. Be great at what you do; become an expert
  2. Influence your environment in a positive way
  3. Every interaction affects your reputation and your legacy
  4. Put in more energy than you withdraw
  5. Find your passion – have fun at what you do

Is there anything else you’d like to add, Matt?

It was great being a part of many committees this year. I really found joy  recognizing the hard work of my coworkers.
